Volunteer Opportunities

Our volunteers help us educate the children of our community about science by working directly with our visitors or behind the scenes. Volunteering at the Science Factory offers many benefits:

"The Science Factory is a vibrant and colorful place. It is full of fun exhibits and hands-on activities. The building is always bustling with giddy children running from fun thing to fun thing. It's a stellar place to volunteer. They keep you busy, but not bored, and you're always doing something different."

Volunteer Opportunities
We value and welcome you and your skills, enthusiasm and time. Below are the ways you can help us serve the community and fulfill our mission.

Education Volunteers
Education volunteers help provide educational experiences to Science Factory visitors. Education volunteers may choose to specialize in one of the volunteer opportunities below, or be available for more than one.

  • Docents: Docents work with the Education staff to help our visitors get the most out of our exhibits and to conduct demonstrations and hands-on activities for visitors on weekends and field trip groups on weekdays. Docents also help out with special events, First Friday Tot Discovery Days and YES/YEA No School Day Camps. Weekend shifts are 11:00am-1:30pm and 1:30pm-4:00pm. Field trip and special event shifts are scheduled on an as need basis. Docent shifts are typically between 2.5 and 4 hours.

  • Birthday Party Volunteers: Birthday party volunteers assist the Visitor Programs Educator with the preparation, presentation and clean-up of birthday party activities. Shifts are almost always on Saturday or Sunday, are scheduled on an as-need basis and typically last 2.5 hours.

  • Summer Camp Counselors: Summer camp counselors assist our camp instructors with our summer camp programs. They help engage campers in activities, prepare snacks, supervise campers during breaks, and prepare and clean up classroom spaces. Summer camps typically run through the months of July and August and are offered to ages 3 through 14 on a variety of topics. Camp counselors must commit to covering at least two half-day, week-long camps (20 hours each) or one full-day, week-long camp (40 hours) per summer.

Planetarium Volunteers
Planetarium volunteers assist the Planetarium Director with the care and maintenance of the planetarium. Volunteers that are highly knowledgeable about astronomy can also be trained to present shows. Planetarium volunteer shifts occur regularly on the weekend and on an as-need basis for field trips during the week. They typically last 2 ½ hours.

Operations Volunteers
Operation volunteers assist with the behind-the-scenes work necessary to keep our museum functioning.

  • Facilities Volunteers: Facilities volunteers assist the Operations Director with the care and maintenance of the museum, including exhibit repair, grounds maintenance, painting, carpentry and other handy skills. Shifts typically last 2 ½ hours and are scheduled on an as-need basis.

  • Office Assistants:
Office assistants help the Operations Director with folding, stuffing, color-coding and the other administrative tasks that allow an organization to run smoothly. Shifts typically last 2.5 hours and are scheduled on an as-need basis.

Special Skills Volunteers
Special skills volunteers can be anyone from face-painters to photographers to bilingual translators to people who can offer IT support. If you have a special talent or skill that you think could benefit the Science Factory, we would like to hear from you.
